March: Violets, Chickweeds and Cleavers

The March meeting is on Tuesday March 27, 7 p.m.

Our plants this month:

Cleavers – Galium aparine – aerial parts

Chickweed – Stellaria media or  S. corei (aka S. pubera) – aerial parts

Violets – aerial parts. Herbalist Crystal Merrell reports, “All species of Viola are edible as a salad green or pot herb, some are better thatn others.  Violets make an excellent tea. Yellow violets are more laxative than others.”

Official one for herbalists is Violeta odorata.

Caution: Do NOT consume African violet, a houseplant that is not a true violet.
